NUM CODEX –
Standardised data platform for COVID-19 research
Events in recent months have shown us that we need shared, networked information that can be accessed quickly and used as the basis for systematic research so that we can combat the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and future health crises more effectively.
The CODEX project launched by the academic research network Netzwerk Universitätsmedizin (NUM) aims to to offer researchers rapid, standardised access to COVID-19 data from all across Germany.

We developed and provided this research infrastructure based on the vitagroup Health Intelligence Platform (HIP)—thereby implementing the first national, open, e-health platform project in record time.
The challenge
- Connect 35 university hospitals
- Short time-to-market
- Interoperable data repository
Our solution
- Low-code development based on the HIP
- Six months’ development time with modular architecture
- Open to development and scalable
A future-proof solution for added value
The platform allows for flexible expansion of the scope and quality of the queryable data—depending on the degree to which the individual hospitals are connected. By setting up central development, test, and production environments, the optimum conditions are in place for further development and the roll-out of complex, distributed software.
